What is resilience?
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress, difficulties, and setbacks, not the ability to avoid them.
Being more resilient has many advantages for whom it practices daily. It will help increased emotional well-being, improved sleep, improved system function, or coping with emotional disruptions.
If resilience helps you bounce back, you should see it more like a progressive uphill path than a jump back on top. It takes time to recover but, being resilient will help you focus on the progress instead of what just happened.
To cultivate resilience, you can lean on five pillars: self-awareness, self-care, relationship, mindfulness, purpose.
Self-awareness is having a clear perception of who you are, to understand your personality. Being able to define your strengths and your weaknesses but also thoughts, beliefs, and motivation. Being self-aware helps you also to understand other people and the way they see the world, yourself, and the situation. It improves your capacity to respond in difficult times.
Self-care speaks for itself. It is quite personal to every person, but it can be defined as our ability to meet the challenges of daily life with a sense of energy, vitality, and confidence. It requires that you act on it to develop it. You must take action.
Relationship, and more precisely positive relationship, is a cornerstone of resilience. It means creating bonds with others who support and care for you and you care for them. Being connected to other human beings is maybe the most profound experience we can have in our lives. Creating such relationships will help us to feel better and more fulfilled with our lives.
Mindfulness is being fully committed to the present moment. Being aware of what you are experiencing here and now, focusing on your emotions but also your physical perceptions, observing without judgment what is happening as you speak. Stopping for a little while, experiencing your life instead of letting it pass you by.
Purpose is to recognize that you belong to and serve something bigger than yourself. Having a purpose helps you move forward and cope with personal setbacks. A sense of purpose will help you change the way you see others and the events you experience. Purpose can have many different forms and is not limited to religion or any specific beliefs but can be as simple as being there for my neighbours or committing to a better planet.
The right mindset
These five pillars will help you improve the way you cope with stress and difficult times. It will put you in the right mindset and improve your capacity to bounce back.
It is a general framework enabling you to move forward more positively and to build positive outcomes from setbacks.
In a next article about resilience, I will give you tips to cope more directly with stress. By asking you questions like “Will this matter in five years?”, you can see the broader picture and free yourself from the trap of the moment.
